"VISUALISATION: Computer-Aided Architecture Visualisation as a Method and Product" is a master's thesis by Robert Karlsson presented at Chalmers University of Technology, Department of Architecture, 2007. All ideas are born in the mind of the originator. In the design process, the idea grows, is refined and clarified. In this course of events the design can be said to be visualised by the originator himself, for his own use. But to communicate a design to other people, it must be made concrete before it can be presented. The design has to be visualised. This can be made using a pen or brush, in paper or clay – or by using contemporary tools such as the computer and its vast array of means of expressions. The computer makes it possible to present design in a brand new way, and even more exciting, the computer makes it possible to sketch in a brand new way. The computerisation has had a fundamental impact on almost all design professions. Today there’s a computer on each architect’s drawing table. Originally little more than a digital drawing board, diligently used in the creation of blue prints, it has developed into a natural part of the design process and its visualisation. By closer observation, two different types of visualisations emerge – visualisation as a sketching tool and visualisation as a presentation tool. The computer is either used as a tool in search of a new design, or with the purpose to portrait an already completed design. How does a visualiser work? Can technology be considered art? Does the visualiser need to have a master’s degree in architecture? Do computer-aided design tools affect the final outcome of the design itself? Does a computer make talents in fine arts superfluous? These are examples of questions discussed in the thesis. Göteborg, Sweden, 2007 |
